Tobacco Policy

For a violation for the use and/or possession of tobacco, the parents, police and/or juvenile authorities shall be notified. The disposition for tobacco offenses shall be as follows:

First Offense:

  • A mandatory out of school suspension for a period of not less than five (5) days shall be assigned to the student.
  • The student will be charged by the School Resource Officer for violation of §18.2-371.2 for the under age possession of tobacco.
  • The student is not eligible to participate in the next three (3) extracurricular events*.
  • The student is to participate and complete a mandatory Tobacco Cessation Class.

Second Offense:

  • A mandatory out of school suspension for a period of not less than seven (7) days shall be assigned to the student.
  • The student will be charged by the School Resource Officer for violation of §18.2-371.2 for the under age possession of tobacco.
  • The student is not eligible to participate in the next five (5) extracurricular events* for the remainder of the school year.
  • The student is to participate and complete a mandatory Tobacco Cessation Class.
  • The school administration will contact juvenile authorities to seek additional support and/or services for the student.

Third Offense:

  • A mandatory out of school suspension for a period of not less than ten (10) days shall be assigned to the student.
  • The student will be charged by the School Resource Officer for violation of §18.2-371.2 for the under age possession of tobacco.
  • The student is not eligible to participate in any extracurricular events* for the remainder of the school year.
  • The student is to participate and complete a mandatory Tobacco Cessation Class.

Fourth Offense:

  • A mandatory out of school suspension for a period of not less than ten (10) days shall be assigned to the student.
  • The student will be charged by the School Resource Officer for violation of §18.2-371.2 for the under age possession of tobacco.
  • The principal shall present the case before the Bland County School Board for consideration for expulsion from school attendance.

* Extracurricular Events will be defined as school sponsored activities that do not fall within the scope of the regular curriculum.
