The National Art Honor Society is sponsored by the National Art Education Association, the professional organization for art teachers, classroom teachers, college and university art personnel, art supervisors, museum art educators, and others concerned with the quality of education in the visual arts. The NAEA was founded in 1947 with the expressed purpose of advancing the professional development of its members, promoting art education at all levels, encouraging innovation and research, providing a forum for the exchange of ideas among members, and publishing articles, research, and news which can assist members in their instructional programs. By uniting art educators at all levels of instruction, the NAEA strengthens the voice of art in relation to the other disciplines in the educational field and to the community, and offers the support and cooperation of all aspects of the field to each individual member of the Association. NAEA's program is financed through membership dues, sales of publications, and occasional grants for specific purposes. NAEA maintains a permanent staff at the national headquarters in Reston, Virginia, to carry out the policies and programs determined by the NAEA Board of Directors. The sponsor of an NAHS chapter must be a member in good standing of the NAEA. In organizing a chapter, the sponsor should seek the approval and cooperation of the school administration in establishing short and long range objectives for the chapter. Criteria for membership in the National Art Honor Society emphasizes outstanding artistic scholarship, service to the school and community through the development of artistic endeavors together with a strong moral character and a high sense of aesthetic sensibility. By exemplifying these standards, the individual student members of the society promote an awareness of art and become an active participant in the education process. |
